Kansas City welcomes a new jazz club this month. The old Empire Theatre—Alamo Drafthouse at 14th and Main Street becomes part of the B&B Theatre chain, complete with its very own Johnnie's Jazz Bar & Grille. Opening Friday, October 8, Johnnie’s features a full bar and restaurant menu. There is no cover charge.
“We’ve had a great experience welcoming live music into some of our other properties, including our Liberty home base,” explained B&B Theatres Executive Vice-President Bobbie Bagby-Ford. “When we were looking at Downtown Kansas City, Johnnie’s seemed like a great fit.”
The beautiful new Johnnie’s Jazz Bar & Grille joins Lonnie’s Reno Club at 11th and Grand, the Phoenix at 8th and Central, and the Majestic Steakhouse at 10th and Broadway. All presenting jazz in the downtown loop. Add the many clubs and restaurants in the Crossroads, 18th and Vine, the Plaza, the bottoms, and elsewhere around town, Kansas City continues its reputation as one of the best cities in the country for live jazz.
Johnnie’s Jazz Bar & Grille will feature live music Tuesday through Saturday. Upcoming dates include J Love on October 8th, vocalist Lori Tucker on Oct 9, followed by Hot Club KC on October 15th, and the Millie Edwards Trio on the 21st. Baby J headlines at Johnnie’s on October 22nd, followed by McDowell & Co. Matthew McDowell, is featured with Tim Braselton, Noah McNair, and drummer Taylor Babb on the 28th of the month.
The Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors are happy to welcome another jazz venue to the city. If there are cool new venues that we have overlooked, please let us know through our website and we’ll be happy to give your favorite nightspot a hearty Kansas City welcome.
