We Always Swing

Maqueque

Next up for We Always Swing, the popular jazz series in Columbia, is five-time Juno Award winner, saxophonist/flutist Jane Bunnett, set for Saturday, October 23 7PM at the Missouri Theatre. For tickets and information, check out the website at www.wealwaysswing.org.

Bunnett returns to Columbia leading Maqueque, her newest Cuban project, a highly acclaimed all-women instrumental-and-vocal ensemble. Along with partner-trumpeter Larry Cramer, Bunnett has been "mining" Cuba's rich musical traditions - particularly the Afro-Cuban vein - for more than three decades.

Nominated for three GRAMMY Awards, the Toronto native has received The Order of Canada, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and, most recently, The Premier’s Award for Excellence. Maqueque has played major jazz festivals such as Newport and Monterey, and been featured on the Christian McBride syndicated weekly Jazz Night in America, heard nationwide on NPR. Following Bunnett and Maqueque on the We Always Swing series, the Emmit Cohen Trio plays two shows at Murry’s in downtown Columbia on Sunday, November 7 at 3:30 and 7pm. Jane Bunnett and Maqueque perform as part of the 21st Annual Dr. Carlos & Laura Perez-Mesa Memorial Concert.
